Most expensive car diagnostic machines software#Looking at scope prices and reading about software updates, there’s no way I’ll ever be able to afford the latest and greatest as a hobbyist. So I wonder how much of that there is in cars and if you gave a knowledge person a $20 basic obd2 reader and $100 multimeter and let them slap on the mass airflow sensor while the car was runningwith those tools clipped the right way, they might be able to diagnose things better than a scope by a person with less skill. And sometimes he taught me the scope is wrong and will show the person has good oxygen even when they don’t because carbon monoxide tricks the scope. For example if the persons lips are blue then you don’t need a finger oxygen reader to know they are short on oxygen. My cousin is an emergency room doctor and if you put him on the street with no “tools” he can diagnose a patient better than an EMT with access to all of the tools. How much can knowledge and skill compensate for lack of a $$$ scope tool? Most expensive car diagnostic machines Bluetooth#What do you tell him to buy if anything, other than multimeter, test light, cheap $20 bluetooth OBD2 device? Pretend I'm your nephew who's handy with tools, but not a trained auto mechanic and has a few hundred dollars to spend on some diagnostic tools that might save me money in the long run or have other uses outside of cars. Also I want to avoid car-specific diagnostic tools because that seems less useful. I don't know what kind of fluid/HVAC leak testing kits might fit my goals of being relatively cheap. The reason I'm asking in this thread is that I don't know what I don't know. But FLIR at least used to be crazy expensive. Or maybe that have other uses like a bore camera might be useful for home repair work, looking behind drywall, maybe? And FLIR is just sweet and cool, maybe useful for hunting or HVAC stuff or emergency kit (my uncle is a fireman and I played with his). I'd like some tools that are either relatively cheap maybe under $200 because using it might save me a $200 trip to the mechanic. Is there any other diagnostic tools that make sense from a financial perspective for a home hobbyist? I know some of them are crazy expensives, hundreds to thousand+ dollars and it probably won't pay for itself given how little car stuff I do.īut I do enjoy tools, especailly mutliuse tools and I like to learn so if I bought something I'd take the time to learn it. I know they're cheap and worthwhile and next time I buy one, I'll watch some youtube videos and learn them ins and outs. I had a test light but it broke from abuse of storage in the car after 10 years and I never actually used it because I never learned its function and never had electrical problems in my cars. I have a fluke laser thermometer for HVAC testing, I guess that counts. Most expensive car diagnostic machines android#The two diagnostic tools I have now are a pair of fluke multimeters and an OBD2 bluetooth reader that goes to my android phone to show error codes. I don't do much car stuff, but I'd like to learn and do a little more for family and friends.
